365 Days of Latino Heritage

Latino Heritage Month has been commodified and commercialized with the real meaning behind heritage and history lost in a push to make Latinos spend and make us a brand. We are not a brand. We are not a marketing demographic. We are a complex mescla of people, culturas y lenguas.

Originally this started as a project for Latino Heritage Month, 2009 pero because our lives as Latinos, Latin Americans and the other names we respond to in our hearts are live every day, this is 365 days of Latino heritage.

Two Spirits: A Map of Gender-Diverse Cultures
my own sociological undergraduate education was (perhaps unfortunately) only minorly focused on gender and sexuality. i was busy thinking about class antagonism, the consentual reality, dimensions of political power and other (i think) fairly interesting things. however, the informal education of my peers in young adult hood has emphasized critical thought and exploration around gender in ways i don’t think i would have anticipated some 4 years ago. what a time to be alive.
anyways, i think this map is a wonderful tool for the curious, open-minded and honest person in thinking about gender in a historical and modern context. at its core, this type of knowledge reveals / reinforces the hidden plurality of world cultures and gender identities that are now either, overlooked, made homogeneous or “fit into the mold” of (largely western) imperialist values.
